Recycling

Custer County Recycling has published their list of Recyclable Items for 2009. The best way to maintain a good recycling program is to be organized and consistent. How you organize and collect your household recyclables doesn’t particularly matter, but you should make it your system that you will use.

The following items are accepted at Custer County Recycling:

  • Newspaper: Newspaper, magazines, phonebooks, paperback books, and junk mail. No sacks or strings
  • Mixed Paper: Junk mail, office paper, hard cover books, cereal boxes, and all other thin-layered boxes. No juice boxes or milk cartons
  • Cardboard: Corrugated cardboard, brown paper bags, and feed sacks. No feed sacks with plastic, styrofoam, or plastic containers
  • Glass: Glass bottles and jars. Clean them with water and remove lids. NO windows glass, mirrors, or light bulbs
  • Aluminum: Aluminum pop, beer, and juice cans.
  • Tin cans: Tin cans and containers. Clean them with water, labels may be left on.
  • Plastic: #1 and #2 type plastic bottles. Clean them with water and remove caps and lids. #3 through #7 plastic bottles are no longer accepted. No motor oil or auto product bottles, lawn chemical containers, toys, or cookie trays

Additionally, the recycling center will accept the following items, but they must be brought to the recycling center by appointment. Call 308-870-0313 to schedule a drop-off.

  • Used Oil: No water or antifreeze.
  • Lead-Acid Batteries: Auto, truck, tractor, and computer back-up batteries accepted.
  • Rechargeable Batteries: Call to confirm type.
  • Computers & Televisions: Recycled for the low price of $0.30 per pound.

This represents an extremely comprehensive recycling program, especially for a rural area. The electronics recycling price per pound is very competitive with other similar services. Contact the recycling center for more information.
